Just below Milan is the gorgeous medieval town of Pavia. Interesting coz Augustine spent many years there and completely off the tourist trail. but then Italy has many 'hidden gems'.

The best Italian food experience I ever had was in a small cafe/restuarant (heh, probably not stylish enough for u!) JUST BEHIND the Vatican, so close to the tourist trail but so far away coz it was in the opposite direction that most people would go. Who ever would have guessed? Wonder if the Pope ever pops down there? :) Theo
